Hi Everyone,
My name is MangoldProject (well, it's really Assaf), and I'm here to help you become a better piano or keyboard player, and a better musician overall!
I've been playing the keys for over 20 years now and I enjoy sharing what I've learned. Getting a deep understanding of the keyboard and of music theory is a long process and I hope these videos will inspire you and maybe give you that extra insight that will help you push your own envelope.
All of my lessons now feature an on-screen keyboard, clear labeling, an on-screen score and, of course, my own special take on each topic. I cover both beginning and more advanced topics.
My channel is free to watch and I hope it helps you out! If you want to help, please consider paying my sister's online ETSY jewelry store a visit (there's a link down below and in most of my newer videos). She's a talented artist who I'm proud to support:

The famous jazz musician Charles Mingus (featured in the thumbnail) once said that "in jazz, there are no wrong notes, only wrong resolutions." He was jokingly referring to the fact that you can play some crazy notes which are out-of-scale, as long as you resolve to something consonant within-scale. In today's lesson we explore an extension of this idea to harmony: if we use some repeating or "good sounding" elements in a composition then we can incorporate some weirder sounding elements into it while remaining "consonant", or at least palatable to the listener. I will present seven different examples of this which will help drive this idea home.

Golden era YT content. passionate education. Thanks :)
My pleasure!
And also he doesn't have a pedal in the keyboard 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹
My son has a little difficulty 😅in keep the hands on the keyboard and shifting chords. It is but a very interesting and understanding class😊. Thank you for your lessons
I love the kids playing in the background,❤
Wonderful demonstration, thank you. I just learned my major minor scales and diatonic chords… If I didn’t know that this would be very difficult…… I love how you also are showing it on the ground staff, That’s very realistic.❤
2:30 ❤
Great teacher and great jog simple and very sounding
Just a suggestion but could you please make the video easier I am a beginner 😅
This is just what I wanted or needed
Accessible jazz theory! Thank you. And I didnt know the last part of that famous quote "... just wrong resolutions!" Now that's something I can agree with, because, ya, there are wrong notes in jazz too. (At least what I was trying to do). Thanks again.
Thank you! ❤ More tools for the toolbox. 🥰
bruh flexing on beginners
🗿🤲🏻as a drummer, i am lowkey struggling 😭will take time but can crack it fs
Don't give up! Practice and diligence are key.
Love those Nines. Steely Dan seemed to use a lot of them. Great music. Great video. Thank You Mangold.
You sir are the best on UA-cam. I cherish every brilliant release. Keep up the great tips.
Thanks, will do!
Wonderful tutorial Mangold, your explanation, delivery and set out is straightforward and easy to grasp. Thank you Sir. Love the use of the word Wonky - I am a funny talking Texan from Yorkshire and use if often lol.
Not sure where I picked it up - never been to either Texas or Yorkshire!
Thank you for your videos!
Not simple when you get into either or... then ... after that... still interesting
"There are no wrong notes only wrong resolutions" is what Jacob Collier says.
This is a saying initially attributed to Charles Mingus. My sister had a poster of him with this quote in her room long before Jacob Collier was even born ... :)
@@MangoldProject I know, it was irony 😂
If you don't have a piano go do it on
On what?
Interesting! Thank you. I think the “weird” sounds makes a very interesting journey
Indeed they do. That's the point. You can get very interesting conflicts and resolutions this way. Movie composers are really good with this sort of thing, and employ it much more than pop music producers.
Thank you for the lesson! Is it possible to do the same with minor chords?
Absolutely. The minor pentatonic is the major pentatonic built three semitones up (e.g. A minor pentatonic scale = C major pentatonic scale = A C D E G), so you can use all of the "motions" I demonstrated here while playing on an A minor chord.
"There Are No Wrong Notes." Jazz in a nutshell and that's why i love it. 🙂Excellent video.
Obrigado por Compartilhar essa Aula 🎉🎉🎉
Wow you have really opened my eyes.
It was the spirit of Charles Mingus speaking through me :D
Ciao, quali gradi degli accordi hai usato nel primo esempio in tonalità maggiore? Grazie.❤

Como siempre, inspiración total! Gracias
What the hell am I doing here? I have a test tomorrow. I don't even have a piano.
The same thing I do while watching drumming videos.
My girl is playing piano and for the life of me I can't play chords on the guitar with her. It would be my dream.
As a guitarist, I think it’s more valuable to learn the actual chord names. Pianists may benefit from this split way of thinking more because you can actually play completely separate chords with each hand.
Thanks for a lovely leddon.💖🤗
"Think like a guitar player" i love it🤩
Thank you very much, even though I am a Spanish speaker, I like your videos
You made me achieve knowing the basic in 2 hours while i couldn't in 2 weeks.. thank you so much <3
yeah, some key notation would not hurt this tutorial. Difficult t know what keys are being played given the quality of the vide. Thanks all the same.
Wow you certainly found an old video of mine ... Yeah these older videos really show their age. Maybe I should redo it with updated technology.
Learn what intervals sound like, and you'll hear the music in your head. It won't be a choice, just what works for the segments.
Amazing and thank you for confirming what I was thinking. I am a self taught piano by ear, I don't get involved with notes I simply can't handle them and I just go if it sounds nice is perfect if it doesn't it needs more working out and I am fine. Now tell me please do you show how to use ornaments and how they relate to the chords in left hand ? I have a feeling that I might suspect some other very tiny bits to clarify and someone like you will do it beautifully. Thank you for shearing such wonderful skill, bless you.
Ornaments? You mean things like mordents and trills? Or just generally how do you "fill in" when resting on a chord?
@@MangoldProject Hi dear pianist, yes mordents and trills and appogiatura and these fancy musical names. Thanks, I really appreciate it .
beautiful class so far, now i just need to get a beginners keyboard so i can start practising
2:36 C scale
This video is crazy.i am a piano teacher how a person can play this chord properly? Impossible. This video is NOT for beginners. A person firstly need to be taught how to sit and how to place hands on the keyboard otherwise they will play like they want with wrong position and thats the worst thing ever. To reteach will be a lot more headache than to teach properly from the very start. First theory basic after practice.
90% of all successful and modern guitar players started out by just learning how to play a few simple chords. Nobody taught them how to sit or hold the guitar (there really aren't many ways to go wrong). I don't see why the same philosophy can't apply to beginners who are curious about the piano.
Excellent!
Ok I just found what I was looking for! Well explained!💯💯
Glad it helped!
Hello! I really appreciate your work and your patience for sharing all that knowledge! I would like to know more about fingering, like which finger play which Key!? Is there a notation for that in music sheet? For example, if I take a Classic piece, do every pianist will use the same fingering?
I saw you already found one of my videos on the topic, but I'll put a link here in case anyone else sees this: ua-cam.com/video/uKTT2CeUxKw/v-deo.html&lc=UgySldDdr3W-O5LN7GJ4AaABAg
I don't have a Piano
:(
Can someone suggest keyboard to buy. I am a beginner n need something budget Friended
Depends on budget. Yamaha P45, Roland FP10 or FP30 are all great choices for beginners. The Yamaha NP11 is slightly cheaper and with a non-weighted keyboard and will do in a pinch.
THE ONLY VIDEO I UNDERSTAND HARMONY FOR BEGINNERS LIKE ME!!! YOU ARE SO CALM AND GENTLE TEACHER. THANK YOU! I DON'T SKIP THE2 FINAL 3MINUTE-ADS. HEHEHE
There is a special place in heaven for viewers who don't skip ads :)
Anyone have some progressions to suggest?
Why would you need suggestions? Just pick any song you like and play its progression! If you have a hard time figuring it out, you can easily just type in something like "[Song Name] Chords" in Google and you'll get some pretty good results.
